All about the ArtBox

Applications are open to artists, art groups and community groups who live, work or study in Ballarat and surrounding regions.

The ArtBox is a repurposed shipping container, now a public exhibition space with small well-lit and airconditioned/heated studio work space.

The ArtBox can be used to exhibit artworks and items of interest to the general public and may include paintings, sculptures, ceramics, drawings, photographs, maps, historical exhibits.

Dimensions

ArtBox 6.10m long x 2.44m wide x 2.59m high

  • 8 Window display cabinets:
  • 4 x 2m high x 1.10m wide x 0.35m deep (2 on either side of container)
  • 4 x 1.02m high x 1.10m wide x 0.35m deep (2 on either side of container)

Applications and selection

 Priority is given to proposals that –

  • Present original work in a professional manner and exhibits a good level of competency
  • Take into consideration the location and dimensions of the display boxes
  • Promote innovation, diversity and quality in their arts practice
  • Present content from First Nations peoples, traditional owners and indigenous communities
  • Present a coherent body of work
  • Includes description, documentation and details of the proposed artwork

Applications will be reviewed quarterly by the Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre team.

Duration

The ArtBox will be allocated for up to a 4-week period, inclusive of installation and pack down (unless otherwise agreed between artist and ArtBox at BNC coordinator).

Responsibilities of the Artist/s

  • Curating, installing and demounting exhibition and space
  • Adhering to Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre OH&S requirements and COVID compliance
  • Design, distribution and production of any promotional material if required
  • Coordination of the supply of digital production files to the Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre team (These must be supplied as high-resolution print ready PDFs and PNGs.)
  • Arrangements and cost of transporting artwork and related items if required
  • Supply all installation equipment required
  • Any sale of artworks
  • Artist is responsible for cleaning windows and display cabinets before and after use.

Responsibilities of Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre team

  • Public Liability Insurance
  • Insurance for art works (up to $2000 per individual pieces)
  • OH&S Induction
  • Promotion via the Ballarat Neighbourhood Centre website, monthly e-newsletter and on our Facebook page

ArtBox at BNC welcomes donations to ensure the ability to continue providing this community gallery. We recommend 20% commission on sale of art works directly relating to the exhibition to be paid as a donation to BNC.
